What Petition or Verification Form Do I Need to File?

Please read each of the following to determine which applies to your situation. If none of these apply to your situation, you should contact Residency Classification to determine if you are eligible to be classified as a resident for tuition purposes.  Additional information on each petition/verification category can be found on the Classification Categories website. If you have questions or concerns please call the Residency Classification Office at 480-965-7712 and ask to speak with a Residency Specialist.

Under no circumstances are ABOR requirements waived.

1. I am financially independent and:

  • I established a domicile in Arizona and have been physically present continuously for twelve months prior to the start of the semester for which I am requesting residency, and
  • I have not been claimed as a tax dependent by any other individual in the last two tax years, and
  • I have demonstrated the intent to be an Arizona resident for twelve months, and
  • I have been completely self-supporting during the last two years, including paying my own tuition and living expenses from self-generated funds.

If the above statement is true then you should fill out the Independent Petition

2. I am dependent on my parent who is an Arizona resident and:

  • My parent and I have followed Arizona state laws regarding intent, and
  • My parent and I are permanently domiciled and physically present in Arizona on or before the appropriate petition deadline, and
  • My parent is eligible to claim me as a qualifying child for Federal tax purposes, and
  • Our move to Arizona was completed on or before the appropriate petition deadline.

If the above statement is true then you should fill out the Dependent Petition

3. I (or my spouse) was transferred less than twelve months prior to the semester for which I am requesting residency, but on or before the appropriate petition deadline and:

  • I (we) have followed Arizona state laws regarding intent, and
  • I (we) established a permanent domicile in Arizona on or before the appropriate petition deadline, and
  • The transfer was company-initiated and the transferred employee is a benefits-eligible, salaried employee, and
  • The transferred employee has been financially independent for two years.

If the above statement is true then you should fill out the Company Transfer Petition

4. I am a member or the spouse/dependent of a member of the military and:

  • The military member is currently stationed in Arizona, or
  • Arizona is the military member's home of record and Arizona has remained his/her state of legal residence, as demonstrated by the filing of Arizona state income taxes, or
  • The military member is attached to the Arizona National Guard or an Arizona Reserve unit, or
  • Arizona is not the military member's home of record, but was changed to Arizona twelve months prior to the start of the semester for which the military member is requesting residency.

If the above statement is true then you should fill out the Military Form

5. I am married to an Arizona resident who meets the financially independent requirements (see above) and:

  • I have followed Arizona state laws regarding intent on or before the appropriate petition deadline, and
  • We were legally married on or before the appropriate petition deadline, and our marriage is recognized by the state of Arizona.

If the above statement is true then you should fill out the Arizona Spouse Petition

6. I am an employee of a public school district in Arizona taking courses to complete requirements for certification by the state Board of Education to teach at a public school in the State of Arizona and:

  • I am a Full-Time Teacher or Full Time Non-certified Classroom Aide, and
  • I am taking courses required for the completion of certification by the State Board of Education to teach in the state of Arizona.

If the above statement is true then you should fill out the Teacher Waiver Verification

7. I am a member of an American Indian Tribe recognized by the U.S. Department of Interior and:

  • My reservation land lies in Arizona and extends into another state, and
  • I am a resident of that reservation.

If the above statement is true then you should fill out the Native American Verification
